Ring of Kerry coastal drive around the Iveragh Peninsula. Lots of stunning mountain and coastal scenery. We spent a large part of the day exploring abandoned castles and stone forts near Cahersiveen and driving around Valencia Island. We all had a blast exploring the ruins of Ballyberry castle as well as the Cahergall and Leacanabuaile stone ringforts. Cathair or Caher is a general term for a stone fort in Ireland. Ireland has thousands of these round forts which may more practically have served to protect livestock and other farming activities more than as actual fortifications. We took the car ferry to Valencia Island and drove up Geokaun Mountain to the 600 foot high Fogher Cliffs. Valentia was the eastern terminus of the first commercially viable transatlantic telegraph cable.
